Finland — Guide

Lapland

Glass cabins, northern lights and a silence older than the world.

Lapland is one of the few places left where you go to feel genuinely small. The aurora borealis appearing overhead, a husky sled under snow-laden pines, the sauna-and-frozen-lake ritual at midnight — none of it is an exaggeration.

Apukka Resort sits lakeside in the taiga forest just outside Rovaniemi — away from the city's light pollution and one of the best-positioned bases in the region for the Northern Lights, with Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle line a short drive away.

Best For

  • Northern lights chasers
  • Couples & romantic winter escapes
  • Families (reindeer safaris, husky sleds, Santa's Village)
  • Total wilderness immersion
  • First-time Arctic travellers
  • Photography & content creators

What To Do

Three Rovaniemi adventures, all run by Apukka Resort's own guides, mushers and reindeer herders — book direct, no agency mark-up.

01

Snowtrain to Northern Lights Camp

The Editor's Pick

ROVANIEMI · NIGHT TRAIN · ARCTIC CAMPFIRE

A gently heated Snowtrain carries you roughly 20 minutes through silent, snow-draped forest to a traditional Lappish kota deep in the Rovaniemi wilderness. Settle by the campfire for hot drinks and a snack while your guide talks you through camera settings — the darkness alone is worth the trip, aurora or not.

02

Reindeer Sleigh Ride at Night

ROVANIEMI · REINDEER HERDERS · LAPPISH TRADITION

Glide through untouched wilderness on a reindeer-drawn sleigh, exactly as generations of Lapland's herders once travelled. Stop at a remote lavvu for a hot drink and stories from the reindeer herders themselves, with a genuine chance of the aurora overhead.

03

Husky Adventure, 6km Self-Driven

SELF-DRIVEN · APUKKA HUSKY FARM · ADRENALINE

After a short briefing from Apukka's own mushers, you take the reins — driving your own team of huskies through 6km of snow-covered forest trail. Meet the dogs (and the puppies) up close before and after, then warm up with a hot drink back at the farm.

Where We'd Stay

Sleep Beneath the Aurora

One address, personally vetted — with a contact in place for you.

Apukka Resort Aurora Cabin, Rovaniemi Aurora Cabins

Rovaniemi · Taiga Forest

Apukka Resort

Glass-roofed Aurora Cabins on the shore of Apukka's own lake, minutes from Rovaniemi — home to the resort's husky farm, reindeer herd and the Aitta restaurant behind almost everything on this page. The best-positioned base in the region for the Northern Lights, with winter clothing included and a shuttle running daily into the city.

How to Get There

Airport to Aurora

The whole journey from landing to your first night under the lights takes under half an hour.

Rovaniemi Airport

Fly direct into RVN — the only airport built for this trip.

15-Minute Taxi

A straight run north out of the city, roughly €40 one-way.

Apukka Resort

Lakeside in the taiga forest, checked in before you've adjusted to the light.

Stay at the Resort, Not in Town

If you're not staying at Apukka itself, base yourself in Rovaniemi town and come out to the resort for activities and evenings — dinner, then a night chasing the aurora. Sleeping in town gives you close to zero chance of actually seeing the lights: the city's own glow drowns out the sky.

Free Shuttles, Both Ways

Apukka runs its own shuttle between Rovaniemi town and the resort, and a second route from the resort straight to Santa Claus Village — entrance is free, and the shuttle is complimentary for resort guests.

Insider Tip

At Santa Claus Village, find the official post office and send a postcard home. Stamped and posted from there, it arrives exactly one week before Christmas — whenever you actually send it. One of the most quietly brilliant things about this place.

Before You Go

The Essentials

Everything to sort before you land — five minutes, max.

Visa

Schengen visa — EU passport holders visa-free; others check entry requirements.

Best Time

November–March for northern lights; December for the fullest snow.

Daylight

Polar night in December means near-zero daylight — embrace it, it's part of the magic.

Clothing

Base layer, mid layer, expedition outer layer and proper arctic boots. Do not improvise.

Currency

Euro (EUR). Cards accepted almost everywhere.

Language

Finnish and Sámi; English widely spoken at resorts.

Getting There

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is the easier option — a direct 15–20 minute transfer to Apukka Resort. Ivalo (IVL) and Kittilä (KTT) serve other parts of Lapland, further from Rovaniemi.

Aurora Tips

Visible 10pm–2am on clear nights. Apps: My Aurora Forecast, SpaceWeatherLive.

What to Eat

Taste of Lapland

Reindeer, rye and cloudberries — the dishes, drinks and snacks that define a Finnish Arctic table. Order at least half this list while you're in Rovaniemi.

Poronkäristys

Sautéed Reindeer

Thin-sliced reindeer sautéed in butter, served with mashed potato, lingonberry jam and pickles — Lapland's defining dish, on nearly every menu in Rovaniemi.

Lohikeitto

Salmon Soup

A creamy, dill-flecked soup of salmon and potato — the dish locals actually eat on a cold day, not just for tourists.

Leipäjuusto

"Squeaky" Bread Cheese

A mild, pan-fried cheese with a distinctive squeak, served warm with cloudberry jam — dessert, Lappish-style.

Lakkahillo

Cloudberry Preserve

Golden Arctic berries, foraged from the marshes each August, spooned over ice cream, pancakes, or eaten straight off the spoon.

Korvapuusti

Cinnamon Bun

Finland's cardamom-and-cinnamon bun, taken with coffee at any hour — hand-twisted pulla dough, still warm from the oven.

Glögi

Mulled Berry Wine

A hot spiced drink of blackcurrant or red wine with almonds and raisins — the taste of a Finnish winter evening.
